(N) OffBeat's third "litter"

Dixie's boy two weeks old.

The third (N) OffBeat litter was born 21 May 2005. Friday afternoon, 20 May, an ultrasound check showed there were three kittens alive and kicking in Dixie's tummy. We knew from an earlier ultrasound that there also was one dead among them, hence the extra check up on the 69th day from first day of mating. Dixie came into labour the same night, but unfortunately the dead one came first, and then everything started to go wrong. I waited too long to take Dixie to the vet for a Cæsarean operation, and only one survived; a lovely boy.

Twelve weeks old

The last couple of weeks Einar has grown tremendously. Due to special circumstances involving our neuter William, we had to rehome Alfie -- and since Einar's owners fell in love with Alfie at first sight, and he fell all over for them, Einar has now moved together with his best mate to his new home.
I will, however, see them both quite often, since I am chosen to be their "royal nail-clipper". I still miss them terribly, but will soon see them again. Moreover, they've come to The Best Home Ever in Norway!

Einar, the toughest little red boy ever!

He's got a little pinch, but who hasn't?

Lovely Einar. He purrs like a little motorbike!

Alfie and Einar; my two wonderful boys.

Alfie and Einar with their new "dad".

Alfie's new "mother" feeding him with cake.

Einar diving into the cake, and very good it was!

The soulbrothers in a window, ready for takeoff.

Ten weeks and really strange

At his ten weeks birthday, Einar has still got a rubber face. One minute he looks fairly intelligent, the next he looks like a retard. His behaviour, however, reveals that he is a kitten that is not stupid at all. He acts smart, he is vivid and he is an adorable little Siamese boy.
He is still a bit thin, though he weighs well over one kilo. More than 1.2 kg, in fact (it's impossible to get an accurate weight, because he refuses to sit still on the digital scale), and he eats like a little horse.

By the waterbowl in the kitchen window.

Licking his nose, looking for some action.

Einar and SingSang playing in the lounge.

Dixie and Einar not wanting me to smoke.

Einar playing. He looks like a kangaroo?

Or maybe he just looks darn stupid?

At least he is attentive! And very cute . . .

Or not so cute? More arrogant? But a darling . . .

Nine weeks and many faces

Einar is now nine weeks old. I don't know why, but at this age all the kittens in this house have looked awful. Or just funny. Einar is no exception. One moment he looks like a complete idiot, the next he looks like an old grumpy man.

Einar, exactly 9 weeks old. Looking weird.

Another moment, looking more normal.

Yet another moment, looking mean.

He can also look fairly intelligent.

Einar with an innocent look, very much baby.

Einar's attentive look. Waiting for a kiss.

Einar looking sinister and critical.

Different angle, different look, but still priestly.

Eight weeks and fit for fight

Although he still hasn't become as chubby as he was before he spent one night vomiting and the next day without an appetite, he shows every sign of being totally fit again. Actually, he is so very much so, that he is beyond control and is all over the place - often at the same time . . . And thus drives both his mother and me insane with worry!
Where is he now? we shout at each other. But then he comes running with his tail up high, so happy and proud.

Einar, exactly 8 weeks old. Proud and strong.

And so cute, too! His eyes are so beautiful.

Einar playing hide and seek.

Einar playing in the garden again.

Seven weeks and first children's disease

After several hours out playing in the garden, Einar came up with a minor stomach problem during the night. He vomited and didn't want to eat. X-rays and ultrasound didn't show anything irregular, more than maybe a tiny thing that could be a small stone or a bit of dirt.
The day after I syringed food and water into his mouth, and towards the evening he got better and started eating by himself again.
However, he lost about 60-70 grams of weight. He very soon started to gain weight again, though.

A couple of days after his bad night.

Good to relax on someone's knees.

And even better to have a good sleep!

Einar was soon back to play activities again.

The day before his 7 weeks old birthday.

Still the day before his 7 weeks birthday.

The same night he got sick and vomited.

That night he looked a bit miserable, poor Einar.

Six weeks and three days old

He's growing and becoming more and more cocky by the hours. Our bed is a rather high bed, but Einar has no problems whatsoever of climbing up and making room for himself during our nightly struggles for undisturbed sleep -- surrounded by cats who constantly try to make more room for themselves; and less for us.

Einar, 6 weeks, 3 days, and tougher than most.

He has his soft moments, though, like other guys.

He can sleep all over the place, and often does.

He is a sweetie, though, and knows it.

Einar is rather interested in gardening.

He investigates, makes his plans and . . .

. . . then he goes for it. The ivy is a challenge.

He managed to climb rather high, actually.

Five and a half weeks old

Little Einar, our darling little humpback, is getting lovelier and lovelier. People have told me there is something special about red boys, and I'm starting to believe them.
Einar is such a sweet, trusting and interested little character. Yes, interested. He's interested in everything that comes his way. Not only curious, but interested. I cannot explain it better than that, but there is a difference in behaviour from ordinary curious kittens and to his sort of intellectual interest in things.
He is an agile climber and runner. And looks extremely funny while performing the said activities.

Einar five and a half weeks old, and adorable.

He has got lovely eyes, so very blue . . .

He looks rather smart, doesn't he?

In many ways, Einar resembles his mother.

Einar has already developed a taste . . .

. . . for the outdoor life and adventures.

Brave as a lion he moves through the grass.

But it's always best to have Mum nearby.

Einar has scoliosis

Monday 20th I discovered that Einar seemed to be a little bent to the right when he ran about and played. Took him to the vet Tuesday morning, and was told Einar has something that looks like scoliosis, or at least something that makes his spine not completely straight, and his ribcage on the right side to protrude a little. It might well be that he will grow out of it. The vet didn't think this was a hereditary trait, but something congenital -- developed in the uterus.

Whatever it is, Einar does not seem to notice it himself. He is very active now. Running, playing, attacking Alfie and poor Gabriel who dropped by for a visit, eating and gaining weight in a very normal way. Today he weighs about 565 grams, and he is not yet 5 weeks old.

He still loves his Mum's milk the best.

Which gives me a chance to photograph him.

It's only when he suckle or sleeps . . .

. . . that he keeps a position long enough!

Einar is curious about Tom's diet.

Mayonnaise isn't that healthy, is it?

Don't step on the remote, Tom says.

Enough! Dixie says. She is a strict mother.

Four weeks old

Little Einar is obviously a climber. He loves to climb cushions, my legs when I lie down and keep them a bit high, but so far he hasn't tried the little climbing post beside the bed.
He also loves to play with a little ball.

Einar plays a bit more rough now. Big boy!

But sleeping close to Mummy is still the best.

Dixie is so touchingly proud of her son.

Whatever breed or species, babies are cute.

Three and a half weeks old

Since his "third week birthday", Einar's development into an explorative and active little boy has exploded. He is now playing, tries to climb everything he encounters and is showing all signs of being a very sociable little guy.

Einar on his three weeks birthday. So very cute!

Einar, 3.5 weeks old. Growing fast. Tough!

Here he is trying to climb a cushion.

He is such a little charmer, Dixie's little boy.

A giant mouse is no match for Einar, is it?

No, it isn't. Einar climbs it and defeats it!

Dixie checks everything is ok on top of the shelf.

Until she gives the go-sign, Alfie controls Einar.

Three weeks tomorrow

Einar is much more awake now. He can hear, he can see and he wants to investigate more of his surroundings. He has made his first attempts at playing.

Tomorrow Einar will be three weeks old.

Einar has shown the first attempts at playing.

Alfie and Einar again. They're so cute.

Alfie and Dixie working together.

Alfie has become very fond of little Einar.

Alfie helps out with the daily care.

He doesn't mind washing the other end, either.

Einar seems to appreciate Alfie, too.

17 days old and adorable!

He's so fat, so cute and so wonderful, Dixie's little boy. I think Einar is his name, he looks like an Einar . . .

As long as he can eat, Einar is happy.

Not easy to take a good portrait of this boy.

Will he be red or creme? Some days he looks red.

At the moment Dixie keeps her boy under a bed.

Dixie-boy two weeks old

Two weeks old, he weighs about 300 grams. He is walking, sort of, and it's obvious he can hear. Everything looks fine, except that Dixie wants to bring him along sometimes, especially when I prepare food in the kitchen. He doesn't seem to mind, though.

She is very proud of him, and he doesn't complain.

Dixie-boy taking his first steps. Quite an effort!

A name is a serious thing. Maybe his name is Einar.

On the other hand, he may be a Gerhardsen.

Einar has got a firm chin. Seems to be stubborn, too.

Maybe we should call him Chubby in stead of Einar?

At the moment he's as broad as he is long.

Better to be fat than thin at this age, maybe?

Dixie-boy one week old

Saturday morning, May 28th, at his 1 week birthday, our little boy weighed 198 grams. He is more awake now, and his eyes are open. Whether he sees much, or nothing at all, is an open question, but it is obvious that he reacts on bright light.

He seems to be a calm boy with a healthy appetite.

He does not like being photographed, though.

No, he definitely doesn't like being photographed!

But it helps when Mum comes to comfort him.

Dixie-boy four days old

He weighed only 90 grams when he was rescued from his mother's womb. In the afternoon 25 May, four days old, he weighed 150 grams, so he seems to grow and prosper.

Since he is the only one, all four pictures below are of him.

His eyes are only just starting to open.

He seems to be a timid, content little boy.

We think he has inherited his mother's deep chin.

His colour will probably be red or creme.
